Thanks very much for that, Ron. As the previous thread (May 2006) comments, the plot thickens !

Hayburn Wyke is some miles south of Ness point (which is the northerly tip of Robin Hood's Bay), and especially if one were trying to avoid roads, farm tracks, etc, it would take at least a full day of walking over difficult terrain to reach it. No way could one 'wade ashore at Ness Point'. In the previous thread Ness Point is mentioned in connection with a landing on July 27th, so I wonder if this is an entirely separate landing ? Perhaps worth pointing out that Ness Point is about the most exposed point on that bit of the coast, so any (intentional) landing there would be highly conspicuous, as well as unnecessarily far from the railway. (See 'Mutant's post of May 23rd 2006. The two men's account of how they came to be there sounds feasible.)

Walther's account makes perfectly good geographical sense, in that there was a coastal railway running between Scarborough and Whitby, which then goes inland (the present Esk Valley Railway) to Middlesborough. It could well have been used for carrying 'war materials' of some sort, though probably the intention would have been just general disruption. If one were trying to attack the railway at any point from the sea, H Wyke would be an ideal spot to land saboteurs.

Port Mulgrave is considerably further north again, half way between Whitby and Middlesborough.

There is a mention elsewhere of saboteurs being landed by Mahn from UB21 'near Whitby', 'only months before the Armistice'. If the date is even approximately right, and the commander was indeed Mahn, that would need to be May 1918 at the earliest - but no source is given for that information. Can anyone shed any light on it ?

May I ask where you got your mention of Ness Point ? It does not seem to be in Walther's KTB account of the July 19th landing.

Thanks again - Frank
