Post war research indicated that the projected track of the U-boat would have to be barraged by depth-charges to even stand a chance of sinking it. Until late 1917 the standard of Admiralty depth charges carried by the Auxiliary patrol, was unreliable (and weak) to put it mildly.

The chances of a successful sinking in this encounter would have been negligible in my estimation
