In exactly this sort of situation, Lloyd's War Losses is not good enough. I can think off the top of my head of three other cases listed in the damaged section of LWL in which ships were abandoned by the crew as the U-boat wanted to sink then, then a patrol vessel arrived, the U-boat dived and the ship was either towed in or reboarded by its crew and was undamaged.
Will take a look at UC 21's KTB but just reading Spindler does not suggest that PAUL was necessarily damaged.
