o.k., here are the details from file ADM 137/3998 (TNA, Kew, London):
S/S PAUL (Cpt. J. Segers) left Swansea on 01.08.1917, 3 a.m., for Calais with an cargo of coal.
Submarine was first seen at 00:46h G.M.T. on 04.08.1917 in position 12 miles West (mag) from Portland Bill LH, about 5 cables distant after UC 21 opened fire.
PAUL headed towards land but was overhauled by UC 21 and after the 12th shot stopped and was abandoned by the crew (13 hands) at 00:55h.
UC 21 fired no shots afterwards an did not hit PAUL at all: ship was not damaged !
The crew was questioned, than 6 of them were took off the boats and 2 of the U-Boat-crew put on board with bombs, but the boats came back and the belgian Master instead was ordered to go aboard PAUL to open the valves! This the master did, but he not fully opened the valves, hoping that an patrol vessel might arrive.
UC 21 dived about 01:15h because of an approaching patrol vessel (name not given in the report!), crew returned to PAUL and closed the valves.
PAUL was escorted into Weymouth Bay by the patrol craft.
