I should have said that HMS Avon was attacked off Lochranza, at the North of Arran. I can look out dates that submarines are mentioned, but just because a submarine was mentioned as "attacked" or even "seen" doesn't mean there was one there and mines could have been in position for some time before they were found.
I imagine that there were more U-boats in the Irish Sea in late 1917 and 1918 than earlier in 1917 because of the introduction of convoy. They will have come in looking for looking for unescorted ships, before the ships joined convoys or after they had left them.
