Thank you very much for your reply Michael. My husband's relative, Ernest Orlando Rickard, was Master of the Netherton on the 1911 census but I have been unable to establish whether he was, in fact, still Master when it was sunk during the war.
The family story has it that he was sunk on the last day of the first world war (mind you, they also say he was Spanish but he comes from a long line of Cornishmen!). He is commemmorated on the War memorial in Wadebridge, Cornwall and it is thought there is some connection with a ship known as the Sarah Lighfoot but I have really reached a full stop in finding out the truth of the story but it does sound like he got out of the sinking of the Netherton alive (if indeed he was still Master).
Can you suggest where I go now for some information? You sound very knowledgeable and your help is much appreciated.
Very best regards
Louise
