There are three theories about the USS Sandiego. Capt Christie of the San Diego thought it was a torpedo. The US Navy inquiry concluded that a mine probably laid by U 156 was responsible. Kurt Jahnke a german agent in Mexico responsible for sabotage in the us arranged for a bomb to be placed on board according to records found in Russian archives later on by Russell Van Wyk.
