I've just discovered what I consider to be an intriguing conundrum, and I can't find anything online that helps.
OberLeutnant Wilhelm Barten, WW1 commander of UC-76, scored his final sinking 100 years ago today, April 18, 1917. He is recorded as dying at Helgoland just three weeks later. Not unusual so far, but here's the problem: His boat had two more captains and was surrendered at the end of the war! No record of him receiving a new command, no hint of what happened, only that he died on May 10, 1917.
This isn't that unusual - There are many commanders who survived the war and then disappear from the records. This one just piqued my curiosity and prompted me to ask if anyone has access to any record that explains how he died.
