Further to the previous posts I have obtained a 2 page copy of the log of the Marie Suzanne for the relevant period.
Page 1 only give the departure port and date together with the arrival port and date between the 5th Nov 1917 and the 18th Jan 1918.
The relevant voyage is between Milford and Gibraltar departing Milford at 3pm on the 17th Nov 1917 and arriving in Gibraltar on the 27th Nov 1917.
Page 2
Gives a brief account of the encounter of the 19th Nov which was written on the 5th Dec 1917 and says the following:
19.11.17, 7.20 GMT 48° 28'N, 10° 9'W
At 7.20 GMT we were attacked by two enemy submarines operating one from right astern and the other from the starboard quarter. After the 10th round from uf the one astern was lost sight of the other continuing the action until 8. 3 GMT when a patrol vessel came to our assistance. Our last shot was exceedingly close and sent a spray over the submarine as it was diving. After the action we found pieces of shrapnel on deck but there were no casualties or damage to our ship. The report was signed P E George, Master and (I think) J F Smith 1st Mate.
(A newspaper article from 1942 confirmed it was this encounter that resulted in P E George receiving the DCS)
Looking at Uboatnet for attacks around that date I think it is likely one of the submarines was U90 as this attacked the Robert Morris on the 20th Nov at location 48° 14'N, 9° 30'W and the Aros Castle on the 21st Nov at location 47° 19'N, 12° 45'W both locations being close to the attack on the Marie Suzanne. I can find no convincing evidence for the other submarine but it is possible u103 or U82 could have been in the area possibly on a homeward voyage.
It would be interesting to hear any opinions on this.
