<HTML>The combined collosus - mission lift barge Giant 4 and Kursk clamped underwater beneath it - raised anchor this morning (Sunday) and began moving from Belokamennaya Bay in the Gulf of Kola towards Roslyakovo dock near Arctic Murmansk, Russian Navy commander-in-chief Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov reported.

Admiral Kuroyedov told news agency Interfax he hoped the massive structure would have reached dock before darkness fell, though the operation was complicated by a strong headwind of between five and ten metres a second. The distance between the bay and the dock is about 250 metres.

Sources at naval Northern Fleet headquarters said the docking was proceeding stern first, where the draught of the load was 13.9 metres, compared with the bow&#8217;s 14 metres.

An affidavit confirming the system's readiness for movement was signed on board Giant 4 this morning by Rubin Marine Engineering Design Bureau's Igor Baranov and the vice-president of Dutch lift contractors Mammoet, Jan van Seumeren.

During an earlier operation, some 300 tonnes of ballast and other equipment were removed from the barge to reduce the load&#8217;s weight.

In Murmansk yesterday, officials of the contractors and St. Petersburg-based Rubin, designers of Kursk and virtually all Russia&#8217;s nuclear submarine fleet, said that "inconsiderable technical delays" had not resulted in any significant effects on the work schedule.

Mammoet representative Vyacheslav Zakharov told Interfax the barge had proved heavier than calculations showed, but he had no doubt specialists could relieve the barge of heavy gear not needed for today&#8217;s operation.

Kursk and the barge are moving to dock supported by two massive pontoons giving the whole structure extra buoyancy to move through shallow waters. Once inside the huge dock, the Russian navy&#8217;s biggest, operations lasting well into the week will begin for placing the submarine on a supporting cradle on the floor of the dock, released finally from the barge&#8217;s grip.

The dock will be drained of water, giving dry access to the submarine for investigators and officials now poised to begin enquiries into the submarine&#8217;s sinking.</HTML>
