The Empress of Britain was bombed by Oblt. Bernhard Jope of 1./KG40.
He received the Knights Cross in Dec.1940 and as this was shortly after the bombing it was probably awarded for this action. He went on to receive the Oak Leaves in 1944. There is a book by Geoffrey Jones called U-Boat Aces and their fates which gives some details about the attack by both the aircraft and U-32. You might be able to get a copy from bookfinders or amazon or maybe even at a Library. Hope this information is of assistance
