local memorial ceremony

<HTML>Off topic somewhat, but three friends and I attended a gravesite memorial service at Ft. Riley, Kansas yesterday for approximately 67 German and Italian POWs who died while interned in this country during the war and were buried here. Small German and Italian flags were placed at each grave, according to nationality of the departed. There was a bugler on hand who played taps and another sorrowful tune, perhaps German, and a team of US soldiers who served as the firing party. Four German and one Italian soldier from nearby Ft. Leavenworth laid two wreaths, one for each nation. The German officer delivered some briefs remarks, as did the Italian. A US Army Chaplain delivered opening and closing prayers. Also on hand were several US soldiers from the base, several older German women, and a few other local attendees. It was a very nice, respectful memorial service.</HTML>
