Diving For A Coup De Grace Shot

Gents,

I have a query here, perhaps someone can assist. I am currently looking at the attack on Canadian ship MAGOG on 05/07/40 bu U 99. The first shot, a stern shot misses, U 99 then surfaces to attack with gunfire. All ok so far, but then the ktb states that once the crew of the ships had lowered the boats, the uboat dived for a bow shot. (perhaps the complete entry would assist, as my translation may be causing the trouble)

Nachdem besatzung im boot, getaucht zumm unterwasserfangschuß

U 99 then surfaces again to question the survivors.

My query is why would Kretschmer dive to take a torpedo shot for a ship that is stopped in the water and there are no escorts around, only to then surface and question the crew? Is it something to do with torpedo reliability?

Your comments and assistance is appreciated.

Regards,

Mark
