Hi Andrzej,

The Q ship idea sounds good but I don't think Kretschmer would have surfaced initially and opened fire with his deck gun if he had any doubts that the ship he was attacking was a Q ship. Another idea suggested by someone else in another forum was that by diving, Kretschmer was trying to prevent the torpedo from porpoising.

Maybe Kretschmer did the same maneouvre before, more reading to be done I think.
