<HTML>I doubt that the u-boat even knew that your boat was there , while the schnorkel was in use the boat would be running on the main motors and not the E-motors making the hydrophones useless . The only way to detect the enemy would be to use the periscope , but after about 41/2 knots vibration affects the vision in the scope . Also the type of boat may also be a factor , the type 7's had the schnorkel located in front and to the port side of the conning tower causing a blind spot , type 9's were farther back and the starboard side giving a better view . Most schnorkels had a radar detector on the top , if your ship was using it the u-boat should have detected it . I doubt very highly that the u-boat knew you were there and stayed at periscope depth with a raised schnorkel to let all know that it was there .At that depth and with an anti sub warship nearby this would amount to suicide , I think this sub was very lucky that day.</HTML>
