<HTML>Hi !
Yes - both are correct. Clay Blair has the outline, of which the handwritten version is a much more detailed account. To condense yet further: `June 13 - U564 (with a group of four other uboats) was attacked by a Sunderland (228 Squadron),
<img src="[wsphotofews.excite.com];
which they succeeded in shooting down. U564 being badly damaged tried to get to the Spanish coast escorted by U185, but they were spotted by a Whitley (OTU 10), who after waiting for re-inforcements eventually took on the damaged U564 single-handed. U564 sank, but the Whitley had to ditch (as in the picture bottom left) after being hit (and also, according to the account, having started to run out of petrol) though their crew were picked up and became POWs in France. One of them at least is still living in P`mouth UK.
U564 was bombed by the Whitley from 20m, so the 2WO claimed. I suppose they needed to be extremely close to make sure of a hit with a bomb/depthcharge. Maybe it`s not surprising if it sometimes turned into an unintentional kamikaze attack ?
Cheers
