RUSSIAN NORTHERN FLEET COMMANDER AND CHIEF OF FLEET STAFF DISMISSED
MOSCOW, DECEMBER 1, RIA NOVOSTI - The Russian federal Defense Ministry's press service reported Saturday that Admiral Vyacheslav Popov, Commander of the Russian Northern Fleet, and Rear Admiral Mikhail Motsak, chief of the Fleet's Staff, were demotioned.
The Defense Ministry also indicated that "another group of admirals and officers both of the Northern Fleet and the Navy chief department were discharged or inflicted serious disciplinary penalties for grave mistakes in organization of routine and training activity of the fleet".
According to explanations provided by the Defense Ministry, disciplinary penalties inflicted on admirals and officers of the Northern Fleet and the Navy chief committee had no connection with the Kursk submarine accident.
The Defense Ministry reported that "organizational and personnel proposals of the Navy chief committee were reported to the President, Defense Minister and approved by the Commander-in-Chief".</HTML>
