<HTML>The chief engineer was the highest ranking engineering officer aboard. In 1936 the chief engineer aboard a U-boat was a Leutnant Ing. or a Oberleutnant Ing. It depended upon the time of the war and the qualifications of the engineering officer. I would imagine a Kapitänleutnant Ing. was also possible . Gerhard Stammer was promoted to Kapitänleutnant Ing. in November 1939 two weeks after U-35 was sunk. if the boat had not been sunk the chief engineer would have been a Kapitänleutnant Ing. see U-35.com</HTML>
