Greetings,

The loss of U-153 is a bit more complicated than it originally appears - for starters she was definitely attacked not once but three times during the period of 5-6 July 1942: twice on afternoon of 5 July (first by a B-18 and shortly thereafter by an A-20A of 59th BS) and again on 6 July with the supposedly "fatal" attack by Lt. Groover - this assessment of a sinking was questioned even back in 1942.

Furthermore, credit to USS Lansdowne carries more weight when all the evidence is considered - there was an unsuccessful torpedo attack on USS Mimosa (AN-26) on the night of 11 July 1942 in the Caribbean waters off Panama that set off a multi-day submarine hunt by both surface ships and USN & USAAF aircraft that culminated in a probable kill by Lansdowne - the only U-boat known to be in the area was U-505 who reported no such attack.

Hopefully more to follow on this subject.
