I am just reading Jak Showell´s "U-boat Warfare-Evolution of the Wolf Pack". Showell is pretty harsh on many characteristics of German submarines, especially factors affecting crew fighting efficiency. The question is would the fleet boat (Gato/Balao) advatntages have bee sufficient to overcome the disadvantages of larger boats if used for missions German boats did?
And why did Gerrman U-boat constructors pay so little attention to crew comforts? Especially considering the fact that German tank and aircraft industry did pay attention to this factor. Showell notes that even the Type XXI had crew comforts considerable below US or British standards.
