<HTML>A good question. Gummi's site shows locations of both U-boats and target ships sunk, I think, although I may even have a book with such diagrams/maps...but I would have to check to see in what detail.
Gulf America, by U-123 off Florida coast, may well have been within three miles. Eye witnesses said they could make out details on Hardegen's boat, and Hardegen himself has said he wanted to finish her off with his deck gun, but was afraid of missing and hitting innocent targets ashore. So he moved between shore and G.A. to finish her, a dangerous move, as the waters were too shallow to submerge in had U-123 become threatened by some US ship.</HTML>
