<HTML>Cal,
Checking Mallmann-Showell's latest book, there is one occurrence of an injured U-boat crewmember brought ashore for medical care. It happened to Maschinenmaat Adolf Schmidt of U-30, wounded during an attack by threee aircraft of HMS Ark Royal, while a boarding party of U-30 (KL Lemp) was aboard the freighter Fanad Head.
Wounded in this action, Schmidt was brought at Reykjavik on 19 September 1939 at 10.00; the german Consul Dr. Gerlach, a doctor of medicine, came aborad to treat the wounded who was taken over to the german freighter Hamm and then transferred to the St. Josefs Spital in Reykjavik where he stayed for 33 days. After the Allied takeover of Iceland in May 1940, Maschinenmaat Schmidt was captured and brought as an POW to Liverpool and ultimately sent to Canada where he met again a number of his former shipmates.
