Rescues by circum-Caribbean schooners?

I was looking at this site's details of the sinkings of Honduran vessels and noticed that survivors of about a third of the lost ships were picked up by schooners from various circum-Caribbean countries.
Is this coincidence, or was recue by local schooner a common occurence in the West Indies?
If so, has any work been done on quantifying the lives saved by circum-Caribbean schooners?
Many thanks,
Sid.
