I confess: I expected a lot of replies to my recent post concerning PQ17.
Knowing how most English language war histories are, naturally, based on British, Commonwealth and American sources, I feel it is important to know which works are reliable in their representation of the German actions. The Battle of PQ17 is especially important in that respect as it has reached near mythical status.
The Allies showed a major commitment in the Russian convoys and there must be an equally complex tale of the German commitment to break the Russian supply-line. With the vast amount of knowledge behind the forum, I was hoping to find the ‘correct’ source for the German side. Perhaps there isn’t one? Or just not one in English?
If anyone knows of errors or other problems with these books, I would be interested in your views:
PQ17 Convoy to Hell - the survivors' Story (ISBN: 0450012999) by Paul Lund and Harry Ludlam
CONVOY IS TO SCATTER: The Story of PQ17 by Jack Broome
Battle in the Arctic Seas: The story of Convoy PQ17 by Theodore Taylor
Abandoned Convoy. The U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II. The Full Story of the Debacle of CONVOY P.Q.-17. (ISBN: 0682470856) by S.J. "Ferocious" O'Flaherty
and of course: The Destruction of Convoy PQ.17 by David Irving
Thanks again,
Bruce
