<HTML>There are references in several books to Oblt. Oskar Kusch
U-Boat Adventures (Melanie Wiggins) has a chapter with
recollections of him by crew members :
'Oskar was blonde, strongly built, a Germanic type, and a very
good sportsman. He was somewhat quiet and serious, unlike
most of us'. 'Kusch was a Catholic and had kept a small crucifix
on the wall of his quarters, as well as a miniature alter .
'A quiet friend who would express his opinions well'.
'He was extremely intelligent, sensible, and never standoffish'
The Lone Wolf ( Timothy P. Mulligan) quotes Donitz order
'Against Habitual Criticism and Grumbling' also Donitz remarks
at Weimar on 17th Dec 43 ' it is nonsense to say that the soldier
or officer must be non-political'
Wolf (Jordan Vause) page 188
In June 1941 after initial U-Boat training Oskar was assigned to U-103 as watch officer. During that time on board he served under three different commanders, each of whom graded him highly.
'An excellent young officer,' He has matured in the war', his
impeccable disposition, his fine attitude and quickness of mind make him a valuable aid to the commander'. Oskar Kusch
was an artist, a devout Christian, and a quiet man who kept to himself; to those who new him he was pleasant, thoughtful,
forthright in his views, and formidable in discussion.
The name of Oberleutnant zur See Oskar Kusch can be
seen heading the list for U -154 as commander at the U-boat memorial at Moltenort
