<HTML>Korvettenkapitän Richard Bernardelli, Kommandant of U-805 was north of the Azores heading for the US East Coast on 15 April 1945. During that afternoon at approximately latitude 48 deg. N, longitude 38 deg West he tracked a fast moving ship on an intersecting course.
This was a twin screw turbine ship, proceeding east at about 22 knots. She was an unescorted troopship, approx. 18,000 tons with a low funnel (or funnels).
She was incorrectly identified as the Empress of Australia (she was in a Liverpool drydock having new turbines fitted).
Bernardelli for his own reasons, decided to let the ship pass when he was in a position to sink her. This ship would have left the US east coast probably around the 10th of April?
I have searched in vain for 2 years and have spend a lot of money getting nowhere fast.
Help !
