U Boat Insignia

Hello All,
I have just obtained a plaque that was supposed to have come off a surrendering U Boat at the end of WW2.
It is actually a Luftwaffe eagle with the swastika removed.
The old gent who passed it one said it was removed from a U Boat when it surrendered.The second owner lives in Norfolk and only has this story to tell. She has no other details
Is this a known U Boat insignia?
