<HTML>The Mariner crew reported that the first sub attacked had no deck gun, but the USS Dorado had one and the most IXC still have one in late 1943. The only U-boats without deck guns were Milchkühe or minelayers.
So we are searching a minelayer on patrol in the Carribean, which was attacked on 12 Oct, 1943.
Only two type VIID U-boats were at this date somewhere in the Carribean:
Of course U-214 and the U-218
After a quick look in our database I can only say that there were not many U-boats in the Carribean at that date. Another possible type IXC boat is U-516.
Has someone more infos on U-218 and U-516?
Regards
