Looking for help understanding the loss of S.S. Norfolk (London, England). My records indicate it was lost on June 18, 1941. The problem is one source shows U-522 sunk it, which does not look correct because U-522 did not sail until 1942. Another source indicated U-175 sank S.S. Norfolk on Sept. 18 1942
S.S. Norfolk was a British Cargo Steamer of 10,948 tons built in 1918 by Bremer Vulkan, Vegesack as the British cargo steamer S.S. Sauderland. She was originally laid down as the S.S. Vogtland. In 1922 she was renamed S.S. Norfolk. On the June 18, 1941 when on route from Newport for New York and New Zealand carrying a cargo of 4,000 tons steel plates, general cargo and mail she was torpedoed by U-522 and sunk. 1 crew lost from a total crew of 65.
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
