Cmdr H B (Harry) DeWolf was the skipper on Canadian Destroyer HAIDA:

20 - 29 Dec 1943:
HAIDA was part of the close escort for Arctic Convoy JW-55B of 19 merchants.
Convoy left Loch Ewe 20 Dec, arrived Kola Inlet without losses on 29 Dec.
Escort drove off Ju-88 attacks on 23 Dec,and drove off U-601 and U-716 on 24 Dec.
German SCHARNHORST was sunk by Home Fleet units,when SCHARNHORST tried to attack this convoy.

31 Dec 1943 - 8 Jan 1944:
HAIDA part of close escort for Arctic Convoy RA-55B of 8 merchants.
Left Kola Inlet 31 Dec, arrived Loch Ewe 8 Jan -44 without losses.

26 April 1944:
HAIDA , 3 DDs and 1 light Cruiser engaged with German small Destroyers T-24,
T-27, and T-29,off Ile de Bas on Brittany Coast.
HAIDA sank T-29, 135 German sailors perish, 7 miles west of Les Heaux.
This was a night action.

29 April 1944:
HAIDA and Canadian DD ATHABASKAN,covering minelaying operation \"Hostile 26\",engaged with German small Destroyers T-24 and T-27,off St Brieux.
T-24 torpedoed and sank ATHABASKAN in 48*29´N-04*09´W.
T-27 beached and abandoned after engagement with HAIDA.
T-24 damaged by a mine in the morning hours.
HAIDA rescued 85 survivors from ATHABASKAN.
This was a night action.

6 Juni 1944:
HAIDA in 10 DD Flotilla was part of a Covering Force guarding Western entrance
of the Channel during Normandy Invasion,against German Surface Forces.


9 June 1944:
HAIDA and 7 Allied DDs of 10 DD Flotilla engaged with 4 German Destroyers;
ZH-1 (ex-Dutch GERARD CALLENBURGH), Z-24, Z-32, and T-24;
in 48*59´N-04*44´W off Iles de Bas.
HAIDA sank Z-32 in gun duels (26 dead), and HMS Destroyer ASHANTI sank ZH-1 with torps (33 dead).
HMS DD TARTAR severly damaged (4 dead 13 wounded).
This was a night action.

24 June 1944:
HAIDA , HMS DD ESKIMO, and Czech Liberator O/311 Sqdn,pilot Jan Vella,
sank U-971,CO Walter Zeplien, off Ushant in 49*01´N-05*35´W.
U-971 had suffered 3 other Air Attacks earlier on 15 June, 20 June and 21 June !!!

14-15 July 1944:
HAIDA and 2 other DDs sortied into area of Ile de Croix near Lorient,
and engaged and sank German Submarine-Chasers UJ-1420 and UJ-1421.
Night action.

5-6 Aug 1944:
HAIDA and 3 DDs and 1 light Cruiser attacked a German Convoy of 4 ships
and 3 escorts North of Ile de Yeu near ST-Nazaire.
German 217 tons Coastal Launch OTTO, Mine Sweepers M-263, M-486, and
Patrol Boat V-414 are sunk by the Allied Force.
Night action.
In the morning hours the remaining escort SG-3 (ex-French SANS PAREIL)
was sunk by Beaufighters of 236 Sqdn RAF.
HAIDA slightly damaged in this engagement.

16-24 April 1945:
HAIDA part of Close Escort for Arctic Convoy JW-66 of 22 merchants.
Left Clyde 16 April,arrived Kola Inlet 24 April.

29 April - 8 May 1945:
HAIDA part of Close Escort for Arctic Convoy RA-66 of 24 merchants.
Last Convoy Battle in WW II European Theatre!
Left Kola Inlet 29 April, arrived Clyde 8 May.
U-968 (Westphalen),and U-286 (Dietrich) sank Destroyer Escort GOODALL with a Gnat Torp in 69*25´N-33*38´E on 29 April.
There were only 44 survivors from GOODALL.
HAIDA had a narrow escape in the last days of the war !!!!!
On 29 April U-427 (Karl-Gabriel Gudenus) on her first war patrol,
fired a spread of 3 torps that missed both HAIDA and Canadian DD IROQUOIS !!!
After this incident Gudenus in U-427 had to endure 678 depth charge explosions,
but Gudenus got away with it !!!!!
Later U-427 unable to dive,was escorted back to northern Norway by U-968
and U-481 (Andersen),where they arrived on 3 May.

29-31 May 1945:
HAIDA and Canadian DD HURON and CA BERWICK arrived with 5th Escort Group
in Trondheim,to take over the transfer of the surrendered German Uboats.
