My Grandfather Harvey Kaplan was head comptroller of Creole Oil that period working and living with my grandmother and Dad on Aruba. My Dad remembers that early morning a they were all told to hide and cover. My Dad also used to play ball with the guards patrolling the beach head.
There are surviving film of that time my Grandfather took with his color camera.
Some parties with other workers and families on the island etc.
One trip he took was filmed on the SS Caribia. he filmed a life preserver that said one US city,(forgot now) and Hamburg. It was 1937 and the ship had the Nazi flag waving in the wind that Grampa caught on film a couple seconds.
The tour took the to Caracas and other islands, and then dropped them off on Aruba where you can see the oil refineries clearly.
The ship must have had Nazi intelligence officers on board gathering info on the oil situation.
