Thanks also for your reply. I will definitely check out the websites you recommend, including the sub myths page on uboat.net. This seems to be a very interesting phenomenon -- the tendency of people to attribute all kinds of outlandish feats to submariners, especially WW2 uboaters. Perhaps the concept of sailing secretly below the surface is a type of metaphor for many things that we imagine. There is the psychologist in me surfacing!!
