You are undoubtedly correct on both counts. Actually, there are a good number of WWI and WWII submarines (German, U.S., British etc.) that simply disappeared and for which no satisfactory explanation exists to this day. The number is about 50 just for WWII U-boats.

Of course, with today's technology, you can locate submarine wrecks even in deep water - if you know where to look and somebody is funding the search. And that, of course, is the problem. The Atlantic and Pacific oceans are very big places...
