<HTML>In just AOD I believe there is no Type XXI or Mediterranean Sea options. Command Aces of the Deep offers these.

I don\'t play it a lot, although I think the realism factors can make it a pretty fun simulation---as long as you don\'t go out and buy a captains cap, long coat, binoculars, and pace throughout your house so dressed even when not playing the game!!??

My own experience is that scenarios allowed you to pick any boat Type. In career mode, you generally begin with a Type II coastal boat, with 3 forward tubes, maybe 6 torpedoes, and no deck gun. After a while I was offered a Type VIIB, which I accepted, and still have. I tried the next phase of the war--time frame I forget right now, but began perhaps in 40 or 41, and still had to start with the Type IIB or C. So I just went back to my previously saved game. Later periods still might begin with the VII, IX, or even XXI...but I don\'t know this myself to be true.

To me, part of the fun was experiencing the very limited Type II that so many captains had to also experience first in real life. Limited range and weapons. Then slowly progressing to the other Types, which the game seems to recreate pretty realistically. You can put game realism on very easy settings in order to learn the system, but I\'d say the real fun comes with max realism settings.

Afterall, all we today can do to imagine U-boats on patrol is read, watch documentaries, visit one of the few remaining boats, and maybe talk to some of the folks who were there. A nicely done simulation adds just one more avenue of approach to all this.

Even the US Army, for many years now, uses combat simulators to recreate conditions inside various vehicles and aircraft---since training dollars have become tougher and tougher to pry out of the government\'s fingers...

Good hunting!
