<HTML>The issue of the unexpected raid was discussed here some months ago. Including various reasons why the warning could have come in late or not at all. Including bad detection (this is 1941 after all, all this electronics stuff was still very immature), human error (as in Pearl Harbour during that same December of 1941, where one radar operator spotted the Japanese attack approaching, but where the next higher level mistook them for a flight of American bombers that was expected that same morning and did not pass on the warning).

Anyway, if we ignore the fact that in the movie the raid somes as a total surprise to evrybody, there is a moment in time at which a returning boat (preferably, but not neccessarily, in conjunction with the harbour commander) has to decide to enter harbour. Once this move is under way, there often is little one can do to abort it, given shallow coast lines, tidal currents, locks, andwhatnot.

PS1: Before anyone disagrees about the \"preferably, but not neccessarily\" bit: I\'ve actually witnessed a MHSO that was having mechanical trouble enter harbour, even though the operations guys, despite being fully informed, had given it a strict order not to. I mention this, because (especially when at war) one has to be very aware that in practice, theory never holds and the weirdest things happen.

PS2: The battle of Britain was over before December 1941.</HTML>
