<HTML>Hi Fin.B

A very well written story by you. There is also some more info I
like too add to the story of U-234 under the Command of Fehler.

On 14th May 1943, U234 was damaged during an air raid by
USAF bombers on Kiel. She was then still under construction in
the German dockyards. U 234 was ordered to Japn and she was
carrying 12 passengers, including Luftwaffe General Kassler and
two Japanese, Chu-sa Tomonaga, a submarine designer and
Chu-sa Soji, an aviation expert. In addition to her crew the boat
was also carrying 260 tons of cargo, including a dismantled a/c
a Me 262 jet-fighter aircraft
U 234 was West of Bergen on the 16/4/45, she turned northwest
and passed between the Faroes and Iceland. U 234 was then on
5/5/45 West of Iceland, and because of damage to her radio gear
connection she did not receive the order to cease hostilities and
return to Norway. The news was finally received on the 8/5/45.
The two Japanes committed suicide in their bunks by an overdose
of Lumimal tables and were buried out at sea by German sailors.
Not wanting to surrender to the British forces U 234\'s CO decided
to sail to United States and surrender this boat & crew there.
The boat crossed the North Atlantic and on the 14th May she did
surrender to the Destroyer-escort USS SUTTON. U234 was escorted
into a Navy Yard at Kittery, Maine on the 19th May.
After interrogation at the naval prison U 234\' s CO and her crew
were taken to Boston Jail. Their treatment there and that of other
U-Boat prisoners was very bad and one U-boat commander did
committed suicide after very brutal US interrogations.
KL Fehler and his men, after being in several US PoW camps,
eventually return back to Europe. They were finally released in
Germany in 1947/48 U 234 was later used by the US Navy as an
experimental vessel. She was finally sunk during trials off Cape Cod
in November 1946.
