<HTML>Hi Seamus
The U-Boat that you visited was U-1023 who along with U-776 did a tour of the main ports of England after wars end in 1945. This was in aid of the King George V Fund for sailors. The U-boats were opened up to the public and they could walk through the boats having a guided tour by the crew. The crew being all Royal Navy submariner's. After the tour the public were expected to put a small donation in the hat for the fund.
U-776 went westward around the coast of England, while U-1023 went eastward.
The main ports of call were as follows :-
U-776 - London, Southampton, Dover, Chatham, Harwich, Great Yarmouth, Hull, Grimsby, Middlesborough, Blyth, Newcastle, Sundereland, Edinburgh, Rosyth, Dundee, Aberdeen, Invergordon, Krikwall, Lerwick and then on to Loch Ryan for Operation Deadlight.
U-1023 - Plymouth, Brixham, Falmouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, Holyhead, Liverpool, Manchester, Fleetwood, Belfast, Rothsay, Glasgow, Greenock, Oban and then on to Lisahally for Operation Deadlight.
I have a copy of the log for U-776 on her tour around the UK which lasted 61 days and in total 368,065 people walked through her and the fund raised in old english money £6,195. 02. 10d The biggest crowds that went through U-776 was while she was moored in London for ten days. In that period 166,000 people filed through with another 10,000 people walking by on the dockside without entering her.
The full story is included in my forthcoming book on Operation Deadlight which covers all the U-boats after surrender to their final demise.
Regards
Terry Andrews.
