<HTML>Hi MCE,
There are plenty of good reasons to not give out your e-mail address on the Internet. The best one I know is no e-mail address - no e-mail virus. Especially if you use your computer for business. A lot of people do it and there is certainly nothing wrong with it.
Nobody is going to complain about you or most of the others not divulging your real name or e-mail address because you guys are not engaging in anonymous character assassination. Coming into a forum like this and attacking someone while hiding your identity is fundamentally a cowardly thing to do. Those who do it know who they are and so does everybody else.
On the other hand, I have been on this forum for around a year and have never gotten a single piece of junk mail as a result. On the contrary, some of the questions I have posted have been answered by e-mail when the answer involved pictures and other info the author either couldn’t post (photos or large documents for example) or didn’t want to post for one reason or another. In every case, I was very glad to get the e-mail. It also gives those who use it the ability to take a topic offline for follow-up or whatever. Also more than once I have been frustrated because I had information or photos I couldn’t post that someone wanted but they failed to include their e-mail address. You may be missing something by not including your e-mail address. I have met some pretty nice people on this forum that way. it has been my experience that there are way more good people on this forum than bad.
As for the others, I also keep my anti-virus software up to date and I do a virus scan every time I boot up. We all seek some level of privacy and safety and there are Internet predators out there.
At any rate I just wanted to make my position clear because I also have condemned those who don’t include their e-mail address recently. You are absolutely right about there not being anything wrong with someone withholding their identity per se. It is only inappropriate when it is done so someone can hide behind it and attack without being attacked and that is the case I was talking about.
Of course this doesn’t mean that someone who hasn’t fully identified themselves can’t disagree with someone who has. Disagreeing with someone is as natural as agreeing with them. Ask any married couple.
If I am butting in, I apologize.
Regards,
Ken Dunn
