<HTML>A code used by the POW's was the Ireland code "Irland Code"
It was a simple replacement code in which the POWs sent information back to Germany. Much of the information sent back was low-level intelligence. The group was labeled the Lorient Espionage Group by the allies.
The code was used to arrange for a U-boat, U-536, to pick up Otto Kretschmer in Operation Kiebitz. Kretschmer was unable to escape and the former commander of U-434, Wolfgang Heyda made the escape and reached New Brunswick only to be captured by the Canadians on the beach.
Michael Hadley, “U-boats against Canada” has an excellent account.
