we did a lot of research on Kriegsmarine wrecks off Brittany over the last couple of years and the only satellite thing that we used was a god old GPS. Magnetometres are great for detecting ferrous objects, and side scan sonars even better for underwater wreck detection.
Unfortunately we had neither, and good old educated guesses, document research, underwater grid pattern and rope searches with echo sounders for topside U-patterns did the trick....eventually.
