<HTML>To those of you who have seen Craig\'s photos, I visited the German War Memorial at Laboe in September 1988. On the grounds, between the U-995 and the observation tower, I found a bronze plaque fastened to a large stone. The inscription reads: STILL ON PATROL U.S. NAVY SUBMARINES PAID HEAVILY FOR THEIR SUCCESS IN WORLD WAR II. A TOTAL OF 374 OFFICERS AND 3131 MEN ARE ON BOARD THESE 52 SUBMARINES STILL ON \"PATROL\".
Vertically on each side are listed the lost boats. At the bottom are quotes from Admirals Nimitz and Lockwood. I have seen a similar plaque near the USS TEXAS at San Jacinto.
The German Navy people with whom I visited the Laboe site knew nothing of the history of this plaque. Anyone out there with an answer?
Cordially.
