According to a report written on 8 December 1943 by Lt. (jg) R. J. Mullen and kindly provided by Jerry Mason (uboatarchive.net) thanks to his research in NARA, ObStrm Hans Schade was one of the 20 survivors seen in three life rafts dropped by crews of VB-107 after they sank U-848 on 5 November 1943.
On 3 December 1943, at 18.00Z in position 08.00S and 31.32W, the USS Marblehead picked up a lone survivor from an Army life raft. His identity was immediately known thanks to the oar of the life raft on which he carved on one face the following sentence: "Ich bin ob BTSM Schade von U-848" (I am obBTSM Schade from U-848); on the other face, he carved: "14 Tage war ich hier im Boot" (I was 14 days in this raft). The condition of Hans Schade was critical as the USS Marblehead reached Recife on 4 December and he was rushed to the Navy hospital. In a state of stupor and delirious most of the time, he was closely monitored by Lt. (jg) Mullen who was next to him "...being there ostensibly as a patient under observation."
Thanks to the medical care he received, Hans Schade was briefly conscious for some ten to fifteen minutes before falling back in his delirious state. During this short time, he managed to state his name, his hometown of Düsseldorf, the fact he was married, had children, was 30 years old and in the Kriegsmarine since 1927. Before lapsing again into a semidelirious state, he mentionned he was topside during the attack and that U-848 suffered a direct hit on the starboard bow, destroying diving tanks 6 and 7. Confusingly, he also told Mullen that he was aboard U-195, but managed to agree when Lt.(jg)Mullen asked him if his C.O. was Rollmann.
Hans Schade passed away soon afterwards and was buried on 6 December 1943 at Recife in the Santo Amara Cemetery, Quarteirao 3, Lance 14, Sepultura 14 (Plot 3, Street 14, Tomb 14).
