I believe that the impact occurred on Soldier's Ledge between Peaks and Long Islands. As a consequence the military later detonated explosives atop Soldier's Ledge, lower its upper edge by 10 feet. About 30 years later, the SS Tamano, an oil tanker operated by Texaco, entering Casco Bay drawing 44 feet, sustained a long opening in the bottom of its hull due to having encountered Soldier's Ledge, 40 feet below the surface at a time of low tide. The Tamano was slightly off course in the narrow passage.
