<HTML>Hi Jeff,
Recently talked to a couple guys having spent their training period partially at Pillau. Well they did not quite - instead they got frozen in with their new boat in the winter \'41/42 there at minus 38degr. Centigrade. They were not too impressed!
Pillau, located at the entrance to the Frisches Haff (Lagoon) on which the port of Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad) is also placed, was not Polish prior to the wars - it belonged to East Prussia. Perhaps you are confusing Pillau/Koenigsberg with Zoppot/Gotenhafen (Gdynia) across the Bight of Danzig, which was in the Polish Corridor between the wars.
I was too young, when in the area, but my parents kept telling me it was rather beautiful in spring thru fall. Forget the winters.
