Back in the mid 70's my oldest brother had contacted someone locally about a German WW2 map case. When my mother drove us over to Mandarin to look at the map case the man asked if we wanted to see the Ostwind and took us out to see the boat. All I remember since I was 6 or 7 was a big sailboat anchored off shore in the St. Johns River and we had to go in a dinghy or small motor boat to see it. We climbed aboard and it was just a shell of a once-proud sailboat. There were tools and sanders everywhere as renovation was taking place at this time. It was a big dusty mess. Sorry I cannot share more interesting stories but that is my little brush with the Ostwind. Incidentally, for years we would look to the right as we crossed the Buckman Bridge from Orange Park to Mandarin and look and see if we could still see the Ostwind anchored there. I never gave it much thought as a kid and only marginal as I got older and studied WW2 in school.
