Sorry to correct you guys, but HMS Norfolk departed several hours after the destroyers from the carrier group and sailed independently at 26 to 27 knots towards Scapa (source: log book of HMS Norfolk). There was no destroyer screen around her and hence no opportunity for Schnee to carry out an attack as described by the CO of U 2511. In a paper of mine published several years ago I came to the conclusion that the whole story on the reported mock attack is probably faked.
