According to “U-boat Operations of the Second World War” (Volume 1: Career Histories U1-U510) by Kenneth Wynn (ISBN 1-86176-024-8):

“U-71 put in to La Pallice 20-4-42.

4-6-42 Outward-bound (presumably from La Pallice - KD), U-71 was attacked and damaged by a Sunderland of 10 (RAAF) Squadron (F/L S R C Wood) on the 5th. The boat returned to La Pallice 6-6-42.”

It appears U-71 departed La Pallice on the 4th and returned after the attack on the 6th. Is it even possible to get from La Pallice to the Mediterranean in one day?
