Hi Brian
My sources states that on 4/12/1943, U-73 left for operations against convoys off Algeria. On the 13th U73 made a toredoed attack & damaged the SS John S Copley-7176tons of convoy GUS 24, just NW of Oran. U73 was located early on the 16th by a destroyer USS Woolsey under the command of Lt Crd H.R Weir. He attacked U73 with D/C's. One hour later Woolsey & another destroyer USS Tripp, made radar contact a mile ahead. The U-boat was illuminmated by star shells from the warships and attack her by gun shells. U73 returned deck gunfire, woundering 2 men on Woolsey. The U-boat suffer battle damage and sunk soon afterwards. 17 men were lost & 35 men including the commander OL Horst Deckert of U73 were taken as PoW. Hope this helps.?
