The U-252 spy

<HTML> Clay Blair´s book \"Hitler´s U-Boat War: The Hunters\", p.552 Blair talks about \"Type VII, U-252, commanded by Kai Lerchen, age thirty-one, which sailed from Germany March 26 on a special mission (Dana) to land a German agent on Iceland\"; footnote: \"The agent who has not been identified in published sources, was put ashore on the north coast of Iceland on or about April 7. Presumably his mission was to report Allied ship sailings\".
The agent, Ib Ãrnason Riis (codename Cobweb), has been identified in an Icelandic book \"Gagnjósnari Breta á Ãslandi\" years ago. He was born in Ãsafjörður, Iceland and now resides in Seattle, Washington. He landed in a rubber dingy at Langanes where he buried his pistol and later turned himself in to become a double-agent working for the British. According to German plan, he was suppose to pretend to be a survivor from a Norwegian freighter sunk by a U-boat off Iceland. Dressed in a uniform of the Norwegian Merchant Marine this ex-radio controller was to send news to the Germans on convoy sailings and weather reports.
In this book, he tells that he had long decided not to work for the Germans and while en route in U-252 to Iceland he lost his money in poker games with the sailors.
He tells a little bit about Lerchen and how this likeable man was lost on this same patrol, he also talk a little bit about the IWO. He gave his extra clothes to the sailors who all went down with the U-boat along with all the easy money.
Cobweb is also mentioned in th \"Doublecross System\".</HTML>
