<HTML>Hi Phil,
Ian is correct in his recollection. I called some old friends in Germany over the weekend, all ex service men and most career officers, who confirmed this oreder came down from the OKW shortly after the botched attempt on June 20,44.
They also confirmed compliance at the front was spotty, whereas the closer you came to Berlin compliance gradually increased to 100%. One old Paratrooper upon hearing this order from Korps HQ supposedly said: \"Once you have supplied my troops with food and ammo, you can bother me with this \'crap\' - not before!\" (crap was loosely translated). :-))
Interestingly enough, in all my readings of WW2 naval matters I never came across this. Always thought the \'Sieg-Heiling\' troops in the old Combat Series on TV in the sixties were an invention of Hollywood. Rgds, RB</HTML>
